The Challenge

Business Benchmark Group (BBG) offers business education and coaching programs tailored specifically for trades and construction professionals. These contractors needed a streamlined, centralized experience to manage event registration, weekly reviews, and access continuous education resources.

Previously, program participants juggled multiple disconnected tools—spreadsheets, PDFs, and various form systems—to complete their weekly activities. This created confusion and poor engagement.

To meet the needs of their core audience—middle-aged, working-class users who primarily use mobile devices—we had to design a bold, no-nonsense platform that prioritized clarity, speed, and ease of use.

This project required our team to refine and consolidate multiple business processes into one clear interface. The weekly review form, which had previously been spread across multiple worksheets, became a guided, multi-step in-platform experience. Event access and progress tracking were simplified and integrated into the portal.

The project team included:

Justine Dolorfino-Thieman, Project Manager and Account Owner, who led coordination, client communication, and delivery throughout.

Myself, Sr. UI/UX Designer, who led research, structure, visual design, and UX design for all flows, and screens shaping the entire product experience.

The Development Team at Impulse Creative, who brought the backend logic and frontend build together, ensuring the final product delivered on both performance and reliability.

Our approach focused on clarity, speed, and building trust through usability. With limited time and energy from the end users—who spend their days running businesses and managing job sites—every element had to support task completion without friction.

Key UX decisions included:

Mobile-First Everything: We leaned into bold visual hierarchy, large tap zones, and simplified page layouts to support users who primarily access the platform via mobile devices.

Streamlined Weekly Review Flow: What was once multiple spreadsheets and worksheets is now a smart, step-by-step form that guides contractors through their weekly accountability check-ins.

Event & Calendar Module: Simplified registration workflows with embedded calendar visibility and RSVP logic, boosting attendance and improving planning for BBG’s facilitators.

Guided User Experience: Clear progress indicators, status markers, and dashboard prompts help users stay on track without having to “figure things out” on their own.

Tone-Appropriate Design Language: The UI reflects the needs of trades-based users—direct, bold, and practical—using clear messaging, color-coded indicators, and no fluff.

The Outcome

The BBG Contractor Portal has dramatically improved how program participants interact with their weekly materials and coaching events. It’s increased compliance with BBG’s core accountability structure, made it easier for users to stay engaged, and reduced the admin burden on coaches.

Since rollout, the platform has become a daily-use tool across BBG’s coaching programs, praised for both its ease of use and impact on contractor follow-through.

It’s also set the stage for deeper program automation and digital content delivery—making BBG’s offerings even more scalable for future growth.
